What our customers say about us!

  • Far From the Madding Crowd is an amazing treasure trove with a huge range of books, as well as beautiful craft items and quirky gift ideas. I could spend hours in the shop, there is so much to explore! The owners, a mother-and-daughter team, are also very proactive in bringing children's writers and illustrators into schools and organising book festivals with a wide range of authors. I can't recommend them highly enough!
  • The people who run it love books - and they are also helpful and friendly in dealing with requests and making suggestions. It is a pleasure to be there.
  • The Pattle family not only have a beautiful and welcoming shop but they have made it a very positive presence in their community. They have created relations with a wide range of authors and organise a marvelous calendar of literary events both in the shop and around the town. They also arrange for a variety of authors to visit local schools, encouraging children's love of reading, writing and storytelling. Last year they organised their first literary festival in the town and this year it is being expanded following the initial success.
  • It's a fantastic bookshop! Children's section is downstairs with lots of nooks and crannies for the little ones to explore, as well as a fantastic selection of books. The bookshop owner has a great community focus too, organising events, Saturday morning storytelling for all children and weekly sessions with a local nursery. Adult section is equally impressive with a very useful gift selection too. Finally, the staff are second to none - always on hand and happy to help, but appreciative of the fact that sometimes nothing beats a good browse in a bookshop to pick out the next read.
  • If I need a birthday present I head to FFTMC before anywhere else. Sally in particular is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about books. She can recommend a number of books for any age, depending on reading ability and interests. All of the staff are friendly and welcoming. I love it!
  • Far From The Madding Crowd is a quirky place, full of individuality. Always welcoming with a smile and advice or suggestions if you want them. Otherwise you can browse happily, find a classic or read a few lines of a best seller, buy a book or a card or a gift - or order something in, never too much trouble. Or you might drop in for a small gift from their serendipitous selection and come away with a book as well. And such a fascinating lower floor downstairs to captivate the imagination of young readers. The town would be a lesser place without this lovely bookshop.
  • Cultivates and nurtures reading for all ages. This is a bookshop with heart and soul... and a rabbit! Amazingly thoughtful window displays! Awesome, inspiring and full of love!
  • A wonderful Bookshop. Such great staff who will go to great lengths to help customers.  Fantastic selection of books, but if anything is not available, they will go to the ends of the earth to find it. As well as books, there is a treasure trove of goodies for sale. A great asset to Linlithgow.
  • This Bookshop should win.
  • The staff are super helpful. They can order pretty much anything and it arrives quickly and if there's a problem they keep you updated. The children's section is amazing with a wide selection of books and staff who clearly know the best new authors and illustrators if you need inspiration! They also have a storytelling session for kids every Saturday morning where you get to pet a real fluffy bunny rabbit. Fabulous place - every town should have one!
  • Great service, friendly staff, fabulous range of books and gifts. Saturday stories with a real rabbit to cuddle, BB rabbit, and cake. The owner also runs an annual book festival with lots of guest authors, book readings and workshops. Brilliant window displays and celebration of world book day with competitions and prizes. The best wee bookshop in Scotland.
  • They are amazing. Nothing is ever any problem. They get me the most unusual books of all genres. They persist even when some of the things I ask for are quite challenging to get. They also run amazing book festivals. I see people at their events that I can never get tickets for at bigger events.
  • They have a huge selection of adult's and children's books, fiction and non. They have very knowledgeable and welcoming staff. They even run a lovely story telling session for kids every week with a gorgeous rabbit helping to keep the kids entertained. They also play a huge part in the community organising an annual mini book festival and have regular events with authors. I visit this shop as often as I can! It's brilliant.
  • Sally and all the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. We've had great recommendations for both adults and children. I can send Sally a message and she'll order in the books we want. Our daughters love Saturday story time with the bookshop bunny!
  • The staff always find exactly the type of book I am looking for no matter how vague the request! Brilliant!
  • My grandchildren love coming here so I give them book tokens every birthday so they can choose the books they want from the wonderful selection available in such a lovely environment.
  • It's a little gem in Linlithgow - very pleasant and helpful staff.  An 'Aladdin's cave' stocking an imaginative variety of books for all ages. The owner is very forward-thinking and appears constantly to be developing the business - organising exciting events for children to encourage their reading, book signings featuring local writers and recently the 'Further From' festival. The shop functions also as a hub where tickets can be bought for other local events. A cheery welcome guaranteed.
  • The team are just amazing. I go in with my kids regularly and the staff are just the kindest, most helpful and knowledgeable. I think my 4 year old wants to move in. It makes book buying easy, fun and enjoyable. Love, love, love the shop. The book festivals, weekly kid's readings, animal events etc. are all above and beyond. And don't forget Jill's amazing home baking that is available at all events!
  • Always incredibly friendly and knowledgeable service, stellar collection, lovely trinkets as well as the huge selection of books available. Incredibly lovely children's department, housed in a great building on the high street of our town. The best shop in Linlithgow, bar none, as far as I'm concerned.
  • They're an indispensable, if not most crucial, part of the local literary scene. They put on performance nights with the calibre of Liz Lochead and Jenni Fagan, as well as events with primary school children; they have an unbelievable selection of books, spread out over two floors and three rooms; the staff are a delight. A truly idiosyncratic and wonderful place.
  • Far from the madding crowd  is a great bookshop offering such a variety. The children's section is a delight to visit, full to the brim with beautifully illustrated titles and goodies.  They provide a good reliable ordering service and always have well thought out seasonal themes, which I love. They put on annual book festivals and hold regular local events. A wee gem and very much at the heart of our high street.
  • So friendly, a real part of the community and would be lost without them!
  • FFMC is a gem of the historic Linlithgow high street. It's window's are always cheery and showcase books that are of topical and local interest. It is jampacked with a broad range of books (you will find the newest poetry alongside perfect beach reads) and lovely gifts. The staff are friendly, helpful and continue to make the bookshop ever more a centre of the community: the shop holds regular schools events and brings renowned authors to the town; the Further From Festival, held for the last couple of Februarys, is a testament to their dedication.
  • Far From the Madding Crowd is a haven. It has a wonderful atmosphere and you can take as long as you like to browse the shelves. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble and they will source and order in any book, should it not be in stock. Usually, the book will arrive within 24 -48 hours. I have attended wonderful events organised and hosted by Sally and Jill where authors take us on journeys into their books or themed events such as the launch of the Harry Potter books as well as book signings and book illustrators talking about their work. The second Further From Festival organised by the bookshop has just taken place and over three days included authors from the areas of poetry, crime, nature, first-time authors and a day for children with The Gruffalo. This bookshop even has its own rabbit. The famous and well-loved BB (Bookshop Bunny) has become a much-loved character with adults as well as the children who attend the Saturday morning story time where BB keeps them company and shares the story. The Far From the Madding Crowd team work really hard to make this bookshop interesting and different, but in particular, keeping books a central part of life for everyone no matter what age they are. It really is a fantastic bookshop.
  • Far From the Madding Crowd is packed with excellent and interesting books, including the children's section, which my children love visiting. The staff also work very hard to promote literary events at the shop and via the "Further From" festival. The staff are very friendly and helpful and are happy to source books for me quickly. They are a vibrant and important high street presence.
